One of the biggest questions I get from couples is: “What should we wear for our engagement photos?” The short answer: wear something that feels like you, but that also works well on camera.
As North Jersey engagement photographers, we’ve seen what works—and what could be better—so I put together a few tips to help you look your best while keeping your session relaxed and natural. As an FYI, my wife helped me with this post - so I’m giving credit where it’s due.
Keep It Comfortable
First and foremost, wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. If you’re tugging at your shirt or feel uncomfortable, it’ll show in the photos. Think about your style in everyday life and try to bring that into the session—this is your chance to look like yourselves, not like someone else. Be you.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Couples often worry about matching exactly. Instead, focus on coordinating colors and styles. For example:
One of you wears a patterned shirt, the other picks a solid color from the same palette
Avoid big logos or bold patterns that distract from your faces
Stick with colors that complement the season (soft neutrals in spring, rich tones in fall)
The goal is that your outfits feel connected without looking forced.
Dress for the Location
Think about where your session will be:
Gardens like Cross Estate Gardens: light, airy colors and flowing fabrics work beautifully
Parks like Verona Park or Loantaka Brook Reservation: casual layers or soft textures photograph well
Historic sites like Waterloo Village: simple, classic outfits help your images feel timeless
Layering and Accessories
Layering is an easy way to add interest to your photos. Jackets, scarves, or cardigans can create movement and texture. Accessories like hats or jewelry can add personality—but don’t overdo it. Keep it simple so your connection is the focus.
Again, be you. My watch guys out there, this is for you: think about the timepiece on your wrist. I’m going to revisit this section in its’ own dedicated post but think about the items you bring/wear to the shoot. If you can, I’d recommend wearing pieces you have a connection to. More to come on that another day.
Footwear Matters
This is one people overlook. If we’re walking trails, fields, or uneven paths, wear shoes that are comfortable and safe. You don’t want to be worried about slipping or sinking into mud—it distracts from the moment. Also, if it’s a long walk, I’d recommend wearing shoes to get you to the location as to not get the footwear you want to see in the photos dirty.
Hair and Makeup (Optional)
For couples who want to look a little more polished:
Gentle hair styling or light makeup is perfect—nothing heavy or overdone
Natural looks always photograph better than overly styled looks
Guys, a fresh haircut before your session can make a subtle but noticeable difference
Don’t Forget Your Personality
Ultimately, your engagement session is about capturing the two of you, not your clothes. Pick outfits that let you be yourselves. Laugh, move, and interact naturally—those moments are what make the photos feel authentic.
Planning Your Wardrobe in Advance
Try laying out your outfits a few days before the session and walking around in them. This helps you see how everything moves, feels, and looks together. It’s also a good time to check for wrinkles, stains, or anything that might distract in photos.
Final Thoughts
The right outfits make your photos look great, but comfort and confidence matter most. When you feel good, it shows in every shot.
